While there’s bound to be more than a few limited releases on December 18th (such as Todd Haynes‘ magnificent Carol), it takes some guts to go up against what’s sure to be the box-office behemoth known as Stars Wars: The Force Awakens in wide release territory. Universal Pictures, who has likely three billion-dollar earners under their belt this year, will be doing so with Sisters, a reunion for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Coming from Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore, the comedy follows two disconnected sisters who are summoned home to clean out their childhood bedroom before their parents sell the family house. Looking to recapture their glory days, they throw one final high-school-style party for their classmates, which turns into the cathartic rager that a bunch of ground-down adults really need.
While the trailer doesn’t have many over-the-top laughs, the pairing of Fey and Poehler we imagine will make for enjoyable counter-programming to Abrams’ blockbuster. Also starring Maya Rudolph, Ike Barinholtz, John Leguizamo, Dianne Wiest, John Cena and James Brolin, check out the trailer below.
Sisters opens on December 18th, 2015.
