In wildly surprising news, Tim Burton‘s next animated project will be based on a gothic cartoon. It will be a 3D stop-motion animated film based on Charles Addams‘ cartoon, The Addams Family. Deadline reports that Burton’s adaptation will have nothing to do with the 1960s TV series, the two different`90s feature film comedies, or the Broadway musical opening this spring.
Burton will draw from the original illustrations but the visuals will be all his own for the Universal project. His last directed animation was Corpse Bride, but he also produced 9 and The Nightmare Before Christmas. He also plans to remake his 1984 30-minute short Frankenweenie into a feature. The film is “about a boy who reanimates his dead dog.”
Illumination will get first look for Burton’s Addams Family and they also have Despicable Me, I Hop (a Russell Brand Easter Bunny animation), Ricky Gervais‘ Flanimals, Where’s Waldo and Dr.Seuss’ The Lorax all in the 3D animation pipeline.
