After being in various stages of development for many years, it’s been a long road for Thomas McCarthy to bring his Catholic sex scandal drama Spotlight to screens, but thankfully, it looks like things are now in order for production. While the director behind Win Win, The Station Agent, and The Visitor recently went off and filmed the Adam Sandler-led The Cobbler (which should arrive next year), Participant Media, eOne, and Anonymous Content have now teamed to produced his long-gestating drama with Open Road distributing.
Quite a cast has been assembled for the project, as The Wrap reveals Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Stanley Tucci are all in talks for the film, while Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber and Aaron Eckhart are circling the project. The film is said to take an All the President’s Men-like, fact-based look at the Boston Globe’s Pulitzer Prize-awarded efforts to uncover a widespread sexual abuse scandal in Massachusetts’ Catholic Church.
The majority of those circling would play members of the team that delivered the story, including Michael Rezendes, Sacha Pfeiffer, Matt Carroll, Ben Bradlee Jr., and Walter “Robby” Robinson. If all the deals go through, McCarthy has brought together the ideal cast for his highest-profile project yet. Scripted by McCarthy and The West Wing‘s Josh Singer, expect a 2015 release as production is aiming to kick off this fall.
