After the initial trailer set up the YA-novel-meets-Groundhog-Day premise, a second trailer has been released for Ry Russo-Young‘s high school drama Before I Fall. Led by Zoey Deutch (Everybody Wants Some!!), the film follows her through a nightmarish scenario as she tries to survive the last day of high school on repeat. This idea might be less hellish, if it didn’t involve a truck slamming into her friends car every time. As she learns more and more about life, friendship, and (yes, probably) love, Samantha must try to do something we all strive towards: change for the better.
Transplanting the ‘same-day-again-and-again’ template onto the end of a high school career is an idea ripe with possibilities. If handled properly, it could investigate ideas of growing up, nostalgia, and the uncertainties of youth in a way unique to the premise. Hopefully, Russo-Young is up to the task.
