Twi-hards flocked to the theaters in droves last night to see Kristen Stewart stare at Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner…or something like that. 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy director David Slade succumbed to the cashgrab and took over Eclipse, the third film in the popular Twilight series. Slade will certainly be seeing those dollars as it set the record for midnight opening gross.
According to ERC Box Office, Twilight: Eclipse grossed $30 million during its midnight run, higher than the $26.3 million New Moon brought in last winter. Eclipse only needs about $42 million more to beat New Moon‘s single day gross record of $72 million. If it wants the opening weekend record it will need to make more than $158M, set by The Dark Knight. Eclipse is currently sitting about neck and neck with the first film on Rotten Tomatoes at 50%.
Will Eclipse set the weekend record? Do you even care?
