With Terrence Malick‘s The Tree of Life all but confirmed to premiere out of competition in a month at Cannes Film Festival, we’ve got a few pieces of information regarding the highly anticipated film. Some of the information has been curated by the IMDb forum, but I’ll note the source for the rest. We haven’t heard much about Terrence Malick‘s Tree of Life IMAX counterpart The Voyage of Time for quite awhile. When the universe imagery showed up on the trailer, it seemed like they had been combined. A freelancer from Negative Films, a post-production house that worked on the film, thinks differently. He said “you will see tree of life and the voyage of time in 70MM.” Of course, take this with a grain of salt, but the user has previously posted information that has been correct. He goes on to state his experience with the film, including a screening impression.
I was able to see the film in december, and feel lucky enough to have contributed to some of the most memorable cinematic images of recent time. the online hype does the film no justice whatsoever, it’s truly unlike anything i’ve ever worked on. the film is as unlike as 2001 as it can be, but its craft and emotional ambiguity are as singular as 2001. whenever you’re involved with a film, it can be hard to separate your blood and sweat from the final viewing. however, terry fashioned a working relationship in which he kept us as far away from the big picture as much as he could. and for that, as i was watching this film for the first time, i was a lucky technician admiring and sweating over my work one second, but less than sixty five seconds later, at a simple cut, i was a boy watching a brush stroke questions i’d never considered. you will see tree of life on 70MM, no digital projection whatsoever. you will see the tree of life.
It’s not entirely clear about how he asserts we WILL see the film on 70MM. I’d assume Fox Searchlight would have a hard time booking IMAX theaters with the busy summer schedule of Fast Five, Thor, Kung Fu Panda 2, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Super 8, Cars 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2.
One could assume they may do a re-release in the fall when things free up, like Hubble 3D did last year. It’s all pure speculation at this point, but I’m sure we’ll find out details when the film hits theaters next month. As for The Voyage of Time, some crew (Nigel Ashcroft and Paul Atkins) have indeed classified it as a completely separate project, but it seems to be in Malick’s hands, and knowing him, he will take his sweet time announcing something.

Saw it at a distributer screening last night as i am in a lucky position that my brother is part of the icon new Zealand distributor team. All i can say is that pitt is gonna win an oscar but this is too out there for best picture. i cant say anything else….
Place your Oscar bets now folks! Seriously though, take it with a grain of salt, but this is the first possible impression of a final cut screening. Lastly, there is word that a few French theaters have announced screenings of the film on May 16th, which could very well be the date of the Cannes Premiere. The official announcement will come this week, so stay tuned!
