With Sean Hayes joining Will Sasso just earlier this week, we have more news on Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s The Three Stooges. Variety reports that Sofia Vergara, best known from Modern Family, will play the female lead in the upcoming comedy. THR adds “she is expected to play a devious woman who pretends to be the wife of a dying man and tells the Stooges she’ll pay them a handsome sum if they kill the man in his sleep. The story line makes up the second vignette.”

Vergara joined Hayes, who will star as Larry Fine and Will Sasso as Curly Howard. Vergara will continue her big-screen presence in The Smurfs this summer and as a voice in Happy Feet 2 this winter, as well as appearing in the ensemble romantic comedy New Year’s Eve.

Previously we reported The Farrelly Brothers have ambitious goals for the $30 million PG-rated slapstick film. They will break the film up into three 27-minute segments, structured like the originals. While still “a single story,” they tell Deadline “there will be non-stop slapping, more in the tone of Dumb and Dumber than anything else we’ve done. Our goal is 85 minutes of laughs in a film that will be very respectful of who the Stooges were. It’s by far the riskiest project we’ve ever done, without question, but it is also the one closest to our hearts.”

Although they haven’t made a genuinely great comedy since Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, with as much passion as they have for this, it’s hard not to be somewhat intrigued. They’ve certainly got an interesting cast forming and we’ll keep you updated on the final announcements, namely Moe.

The Three Stooges will hit theaters in 2012.

What do you think about Vergara joining the film? Who should be cast as Moe?
