From across the pond comes a trailer for The Sweeney, and while it delivers lots of action, it probably won’t do much to revolutionize the genre. Based on a popular UK TV series from the ’70s, the glossy British crime drama follows detective Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and his crack team of crime fighters, the Sweeney Flying Squad, as they rid London of criminal scum. As you can imagine, there’s plenty of punching, shooting, fights with baseball bats, and grizzled voices threatening, “You tell ‘em I’m comin’ after ‘em,” all of which leads up to what looks like a pretty generic film. Hopefully the supporting work of Damian Lewis and Hayley Atwell are a sign of better things.

Synopsis:
Tearing up the streets of London, THE SWEENEY is a stylish, exhilarating action thriller proving sometimes you have to act like a criminal to catch a criminal. Armed and dangerous, the Sweeney Flying Squad are old school crime fighters enforcing the law. Led by legendary detective Jack Regan (Ray Winstone) and his loyal partner George Carter (Ben Drew), they have their own unique way of operating and always get results. With a bank heist in progress and his old enemy making a reappearance on the London crime scene, Regan will do whatever it takes to get the job done, even defying orders from his no-nonsense boss (Damian Lewis).
Directed by Nick Love, The Sweeney also stars Hayley Atwell, Allen Leech, Mark Killeen, Paul Anderson, and Steven Mackintosh. It’s expected to open in the US on March 1st.
Do you think The Sweeney looks like a non-stop thrill ride, or more of the same old, same old?
