After astounding in Carlos, we’ve been waiting for Édgar Ramírez to take on a role that lived up to that early promise. While he elevates studio fare he’s in (Wrath of the Titans) and has us wishing he has bigger parts in great films (The Counselor, Zero Dark Thirty), he’s now getting a lead role as Simón Bolívar in The Liberator.
Initially premiering at TIFF last fall, the drama surrounding the life of the Venezuelan freedom fighter will be Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend and for the occasion, the first trailer has dropped. Directed by Alberto Arvelo, it looks well-photographed and thankfully it’s in its native language, so hopefully good things are in store. With a script by Children of Men‘s Timothy J. Sexton, check out the preview below, along with the synopsis for the film also starring Maria Valverde, Juana Costa, Danny Huston and Iwan Rheo.
