Director Andrew Davis was adept at crafting successful action thrillers, a skill proven by his track record throughout the late ‘80s and ‘90s. His most memorable work, The Fugitive, turned 20 last month; naturally, Warner Bros. have released the film on Blu-ray today, and, while publicizing the milestone, Davis revealed details on his next project. No, not a sequel more fitting than U.S. Marshals, but a family adventure based on a classic story.
In an interview with CraveOnline, Davis revealed plans for the modern reworking of Treasure Island as set in post-Katrina Louisiana. Entitled Thieves Fortune, it focuses on the treasure of Jean LaFitte, a real-life pirate and privateer who operated in the Gulf of Mexico during the early 19th century. This title marks a career change for Davis, a helmer who, despite being offered plenty of action scripts, said he no longer wants to make a film where “violence is the entertainment.” Though he hasn’t been behind a PG-rated film since the 2003 young-adult adaptation, Holes, now do we more fully see the interest in approaching “family movies or four-quadrant movies that are based upon quality literature or books.”
Davis is currently at work on the script for Thieves Fortune, collaborating with Midnight Run writer George Gallo. No studio is yet attached to the project.
