Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Part 1, Do You Realize??, and (Just Like) Starting Over aren’t blockbuster movie titles, cult indie flicks or even movies of any sorts (they’re songs people) but they could seem to be if you didn’t have a clue as to who they’re lushly connected to – the off-beat, hallucinogenic-provoking group known as The Flaming Lips.
“The Flaming Lips are known for their lush, multi-layered, psychedelic arrangements, spacey lyrics and bizarre song and album titles—for example, “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles.”
Gordon and the Whale reports that the time has come yet again for lead man Wayne Coyne to tap into his inner film-making sanctuary. Coyne is the brilliant man (or perceived by others as the “nut-house on legs”) that brought the seven-years-in-the-making film Christmas On Mars to millions of acid-popping homo-sapiens with radiant and glorifying reviews.
Smile people… the eve of yet another film by The Flaming Lips is on the tie-dye horizon.
Coyne tells Billboard , “My only goal [for the new film] was that I didn’t have to build space station-looking sets every time I wanted to have someone say something, only because I built those sets myself every time we shot something for Christmas on Mars over the seven years we took to make it. This one is set in someone’s house and in a back yard and in a slaughterhouse; all those are available to me right here, so I don’t have to build everything this time.” Personally I’m thrilled that Coyne has access to someone’s house and a back yard but a slaughterhouse? That raises two eyebrows and shuts an eye. Wayne Coyne also mentions, “I’m gonna try to get real actors, too, celebrities to show up and have fun with us for a couple of nights. I’m in the process of begging Justin Timberlake to be part of it; if I’m lucky I’ll be able to wear him down in another year.”
Work has already started on the film. It’s soundtrack is being partially constructed by Coyne’s band mate, Steven Drozd.
So until the latest and greatest cinematic-psychedelic masterpiece surfaces via The Flaming Lips check them out this summer on their U.S. Tour, and please… go semi-easy on the mind-altering “substances.”
