Variety reports The Coen Brothers (No Country For Old Men, Burn After Reading) will adapt True Grit, being more faithful to the original Charles Portis novel than the 1969 film adaptation, which John Wayne won an Oscar for.
The novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father’s killer in hostile Indian territory. The Coen’s version will tell the tale from the girl’s point of view, unlike the John Wayne film, which focused strictly on his character.
No Country For Old Men was my favorite film of 2007 and this is looking more like a return to that style, than last year’s enjoyable, but forgettable Burn After Reading. Coen Brother’s next film will be A Serious Man, which hits theaters October 2nd, 2009.
What do you think of the Coen’s adapting True Grit?
