A while ago it was reported that the rights to the Terminator franchise were up for grabs again since the current rights holder, Halcyon, went into chapter 11. Well now thanks to a report by Deadline Hollywood we can tell you the the right are officially up for auction. The package includes rights to any future Terminator films, TV series, and any other spin-offs. The current asking price is around $60 million. Every major studio is attempting an acquisition with Sony currently showing the most interest. Nothing else is known at this time.
As I stated back in the original announcement in September, Terminator is a series that needs the backing of a major studio. I have been following this sell war for the rights since Terminator Salvation. The series can’t fall in the hands of an independent studio because there just wont be a substantial enough financial backing. Sony sounds like a good choice. A Columbia produced Terminator film sounds like a nice thought. I could see 20th Century Fox making a dash for it, especially since they are in good with James Cameron at the moment. But only time will tell for sure.
Who, if anyone, would be a good fit for the Terminator franchise?
