Sundance horror sensation Splice was recently locked in for a release date in the middle of the very busy summer, a clear indication of confidence from the studio. But what do we hear now? It looks like the movie is being edited for its theatrical release!
If you were really looking forward to Splice, don’t panic. It appears that the film is only being “tightened” by director Vincenzo Natali, he told Fangora.
You’re going to see a slightly nipped-and-tucked version. I’m actually going into the editing room next week, and if they’re true to their word, it’s just going to be cosmetic… There are also a few things I’m changing after seeing the film with an audience. I believe what will come out of it will be a new and improved cut, but in essence, it’ll be the same film.
I’m sure there were a few wonky special effects or editing decisions in the Sundance cut that can now only be benefited by a bit of extra work. It’s also entirely possible (but unlikely) that the film is actually be completely neutered for mainstream audiences. We should choose to be optimistic; seeing how Warner Brothers is an auteur friendly studio.
Splice will hit theaters on June 4th of this year.
What’s your take on this? Is it actually being tightened or completely screwed over?
