When it comes to animated filmmaking, a shining example of how to do it right is the work of Studio Ghibli. Time and time again, the company takes us on vividly realized adventures and audiences will get to experience one of their greatest works again next year. In their ongoing deal with GKIDS to theatrically re-release fourteen of their past classics, they announced today that Isao Takahata‘s masterpiece Grave of the Fireflies will see a theatrical release in 2013.

The film, which follows two children through the devastation caused by WWII in Japan, will also be part of their touring Studio Ghibli Retrospective. One can find more information on the event on their official site and see the NYC-specific run (which ends on December 20th) on IFC Center’s site. Also check out a trailer for Fireflies, as well as a video featuring Roger Ebert’s take on it, below.

Will you see the film in theaters?
