The last time another addition to the Jurassic Park franchise came up, its biggest star said the series is completely “done.” It looks like he forgot to check with the big man upstairs. I’m not talking about a heavenly figure, but one close enough when it comes to blockbusters. THR reports that director of Jurassic Park and The Lost World, as well as executive producer on number three, Steven Spielberg, has been “kicking around ideas” on how to exactly resurrect the franchise.
The trade reports that he has had a few meetings with screenwriter Mark Protosevich in an early attempt to develop a handful of ideas. You may recognize Protosevich from a few years back, when the duo were spit-balling a remake of Chan-wook Park‘s Oldboy with Will Smith, that thankfully fell through. He also wrote I Am Legend, and most recently, Thor.
Of course, Universal reps and Spielberg’s assistants reiterate that no deals have been made to even craft a script. With the franchise, based on Michael Crichton‘s 1990 novel, bringing in almost $2 billion worldwide, it is easy to see why they would be interested in a fourth.
I’m hesitant about Spielberg taking on a fourth film in a franchise (just look at Indiana Jones), but I’d actually welcome the idea of another entry. While Jurassic Park was a watershed moment in movie-making technology, we have already had another with James Cameron and Avatar. By combining Spielberg’s talent and these new CGI capabilities, it could be something truly special. Then again, if he gets too invested in CG, it really won’t be the Jurassic Park that we all love.
For more Spielberg, check out The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse this December.
What do you think of a possible fourth film? What could the story be?
