The gap between J.J. AbramsStar Trek Into Darkness and Star Wars: Episode VII just increased, negligibly. After Paramount released the Super Bowl for Captain Kirk’s latest adventure, the studio announced that the film will be hitting a few days earlier than expected, but only in IMAX 3D. Before it gets a wide release on May 17th, it will hit those select IMAX 3D theaters at 8PM on Wednesday, May 15th. In order to get tickets one can jump over to the newly launched new Star Trek Into Darkness app from the App Store and Google Play.

This will mark Abrams’ first use of the 3D format, which will hopefully coincide nicely with the 30 minutes or so footage filmed with actual IMAX cameras. This early IMAX launch is becoming a more common occurrence, with Joseph Kosinski‘s Oblivion also hitting those select theaters a week before it’s wide bow. In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness. When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.
