While some may name End of Watch as the kick-off for a streak of interesting roles by Jake Gyllenhaal, I’d argue it started back in 2011 with Source Code. Directed by Duncan Jones as his follow-up to Moon, the slick sci-fi thriller followed Gyllenhaal’s character as an Army helicopter pilot who must figure out who a bomber is on a train. Through a government program, he’s able to jump into alternate timelines of different passengers for only eight minutes, before the bomb explodes and everything resets.
Made for just over $30 million, it reaped over $150 million at the worldwide box-office and well over three years later we’re now getting news of a sequel. According to Variety, Duncan Jones won’t be taking part and no actors have been attached, so count out the original cast. However, original writer Ben Ripley will return and Anna Foerster (longtime cinematographer of Roland Emmerich) is set to direct.
With its set-up, the premise could easily spawn many sequels, even if this announcement is a bit unexpected. Hopefully those involved with find a worthy reason to follow it up and not tread the same ground. Being a fan of the first film (even if some of the ending could’ve been chopped), I’ll remain curious. As a refresher, check out the first five minutes of the original below.
