Shutter Island won the weekend box office, outperforming both The Crazies and Cop Out in their highly publicized opening week bout. Martin Scorsese‘s asylum thriller brought in $22.2 million in its second weekend, bringing it up to $75 million total. Kevin Smith‘s poorly reviewed Cop Out was the runner-up with $18.5 million, edging out its surprisingly well received rival The Crazies by $2 million.
Avatar saw a 14% drop in its eleventh week, bringing in $14 million. This puts its domestic total at nearly $707 million.
Of note, Crazy Heart is holding strong at tenth in its eleventh week, hoping to ride a post-Oscar surge when its star Jeff Bridges will surely bring home a statue. It brought it in $2.5 million this weekend, bringing its total to $25 million.
Roman Polanski‘s The Ghost Writer had a strong showing in spite of a limited release finishing in seventeenth for its second weekend. It has grossed a little over a million domestically so far.
