Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer have over five decades of film work to their names, and neither one of them shows any sign of slowing down. In the last few years, 80-year-old MacLaine starred in Richard Linklater‘s comedy Bernie and sparred with Maggie Smith in the BBC hit Downton Abbey, while Plummer, at the age of 82, earned a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in Beginners. Now the two will appear together in the English-language remake of a popular Argentinian film, and a trailer arrived to show off their chemistry.
Directed by Michael Radford (Il Postino), Elsa & Fred follows a widower (Plummer) who moves into a new apartment and strikes up a relationship with his spirited neighbor (MacLaine). This isn’t the first time the actors have appeared together – in 2007, they worked on the late Richard Attenborough‘s final film Closing the Ring. Based on the trailer, the film seems pleasant enough, and the two leads look as though like they’re having a wonderful time. See trailer and synopsis via Apple below:
Synopsis:
ELSA AND FRED is the story of two people who, at the end of the road, discover that it’s never too late to love. After losing his wife, Fred (Christopher Plummer) feels disturbed, confused and alone, so his daughter (Marcia Gay Harden) helps move him into a small apartment where he meets Elsa (Shirley Maclaine). From that moment on, everything changes. Elsa bursts into Fred’s life like a whirlwind, determined to teach him that the time he has left to live—be it more or less—is precious and that he should enjoy it as he pleases.
The film also stars Chris Noth, Jared Gilman, Scott Bakula, George Segal, and James Brolin. Elsa & Fred opens in theaters and on iTunes on November 7th.
