When Selena Gomez isn’t starring in the Disney Channel show Wizards of Waverly Place or cuddling Justin Bieber, she’s funneling film projects through her production company, July Moon. According to Deadline, said company has just optioned Jandy Nelson‘s novel The Sky Is Everywhere, which she’ll both develop and lead.
Here, the starlet will play 17-year-old Lennie Walker, “a bookworm and bank geek” who is doomed by the looming shadow of her older sister, Bailey. After her sister suddenly dies, Lennie is forced to take the spotlight, while she juggles different relationships; one of these involves her late sister’s boyfriend, while the other is a “musically inclined transplant from Paris.” And if that isn’t dramatic enough, “her whole world threatens to collapse all over again as she tries to juggle both boys.” The Sky Is Everywhere is Nelson‘s first book, and won the YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults awards just last year.
I have to admit that the storyline sounds pretty bland and overdone, but Gomez‘s latest feature wasn’t too terrible, for what it’s worth. This will definitely be a film geared for the younger audiences, considering that’s the following Gomez generates, and it’s a safe project for the 19-year old. I’m just waiting for her to branch out of the tween scene and pick some more challenging roles. I mean, its worked okay for former Nickelodeon star Emma Roberts thus far. (I’ll let The Art of Getting By slide for now.)
