If this summer has one piece of connective tissue, it’s the batch of science-fiction entries — both small and large. We’ve seen Star Trek Into Darkness, After Earth and Pacific Rim, and the smaller-budgeted Europa Report and The World’s End are on the horizon, but this weekend brings perhaps the biggest, Man of Steel. While we can’t recommend checking it out, a trailer for one of our most-anticipated sci-fi films of the summer will be attached — before that, though, it’s been made available online.
Following a promising first trailer, our second look has landed for Elysium, the follow-up to District 9 for director Neill Blomkamp. Set in 2154, the film looks at 99% vs. 1% scenario, but this time the respective classes are split between Earth and a space station. Check out the new trailer below for the blockbuster also starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, Alica Braga, and Diego Luna.
Synopsis:
In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.
Elysium arrives on August 9.
