Legendary Pictures made its first visit to Comic-Con this year and to be honest, I think everyone was pretty disappointed. A few members of the audience were actually falling asleep during the panel. Bringing films to the Con that are so far out, they didn’t have video to show, instead we got logos and a few pieces of concept art. Here’s a quick recap of what we were given, be sure to check out the full panel video below as well.
Pacific Rim
Directed by none other than Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim stars Charlie Day, Charlie Hunnam and Idris Elba. The synopsis is this; When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace. See the logos for the film below:
- del Toro is committed to bringing the best monsters and robots to the screen as possible
- Charlie Day agrees to let del Toro play a ‘fat wino in the corner’ on It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
- del Toro states that ‘the revelations of where the (monsters) come from is the real story’
- The film shows how the world would change in the circumstances of a monster attack. Contrasts human conflict with the overall larger conflict
The Seventh Son
Directed by Sergey Bodrov, The Seventh Son stars Jeff Bridges, Julianne Moore, and Ben Barnes. Synopsis: The seventh son of a seventh son learns how to exorcise ghosts, contain witches, and bind boggarts in the 1700s. This sounds a bit played out, but we’ll reserve judgment until we get a better taste of what this film will offer. Check out some panel recaps along with some concept art below:
- Bodrov wants to make this darker than how it’s portrayed in the book series
- Bridges loves to work with sets, costumes, props, etc. New technology is changing his acting style to work more with the post production process
Paradise Lost
Directed by Alex Proyas, Paradise Lost currently only stars Bradley Cooper. Synopsis: An action-heavy take on the epic poem centered on the war in heaven between archangels Michael and Lucifer. Check out our previous post that includes concept art and story details.
- Cooper studied the original poem in college and loved it. He approached Legendary about playing the role of Lucifer after he learned they held the rights.
- Proyas says they’re working with a Milton scholar to help them with the narrative and ensure they stay as true to the original as possible
- Proyas hopes that the technology that is available today will enable them to make this movie how it should be made
- Proyas is trying to avoid what has historically been done effects wise for the effects for this film
Mass Effect
Not much is known about this film. It was briefly talked about at the panel by the video game creators. We were shown some game footage and the creators talked about how rich and complex the world of Mass Effect is.
