Sam Rockwell loaded the bases in The Assassination of Jesse James and hit the grand slam in Moon in probably two of the most underrated performances of the last decade. Needless to say, his casting notes are now getting my attention. And his next role might be biblical.

Rockwell appears to be eyeing the role of Joe in the upcoming religious comedy Sweet Baby Jesus, Deadline is reporting [via ThePlaylist]. Other famous names are tied to the project as well including Bette Midler, Kim Cattrall, and Pixie Lott.

The story follows a pregnant girl named Mary (played by Lott) and her boyfriend Joe (played by Rockwell) as they enter the town of Bethlehem, Maryland. As the town sees this as the second coming of Christ, hilarity seemingly ensues.

Peter Hewitt (Garfield) will direct the film. Production is set to begin late summer in both Maryland and Ireland.

What do you think about Rockwell in a religious comedy?
