Everyone’s favorite director (by everyone I mean like two people) Roland Emmerich is jumping back into the alien invasion genre. Heat Vision reported yesterday that the man behind 2012 and other massive and expensive epics is hard at work on a movie called The Zone. This movie, with a budget of 5 million dollars (the lowest Emmerich has had in quite some time), is going to be a found footage movie in the vein of Cloverfield and The Blair Witch Project. The Zone was written by French scribe Guillaume Tunzini (the French film FrogZ) and from what the sources say, two people have already been cast but no one is naming names quite yet.
I was 9 when Independence Day came out and although it admittedly hasn’t aged that well (story-wise anyway, the effects are still awesome), it’s one of those movies I will keep in my heart until the day I die. Hell, it even made me a fan of Emmerich, even through movies like The Patriot and Godzilla. I’m down to see what he does in the “found footage” sub-genre that has re-emerged over the past few years. Maybe he can give his own unique spin or maybe it’ll be an embarrassment he’ll sweep under the rug quickly by making a $200 million movie where he blows up the moon.
Do you think Roland Emmerich has the talent to try something a little out of the box, or is this going to be a massive misfire?
