Not too long ago, Variety reported that Rob Zombie‘s next project would be another remake, this time of the 1958 classic, The Blob. Now Deadline is reporting the musician turned director has dropped The Blob to head The Lords of Salem.
The Lords of Salem (also the title of a song from Zombie’s third solo album, Educated Horses) will be set in modern Salem, Massachusetts when a 300-year old coven of witches show up, presumably to terrorize the inhabitants. It will be his first entirely original film since the excellent The Devil’s Rejects in 2005. Zombie said he was attracted to working with Haunted Films (Paranormal Activity) on the project because they’re giving him full authority over script (which Zombie will write himself), casting, and final cut.
““I’ve had differing levels of control,” Zombie said, “with the best experience being Lionsgate on The Devil’s Rejects, when I made the movie and they said, `great.’ The two Halloween movies were more give and take, and I had enough bloody battles to get my way that by the time I got it, I didn’t care anymore.”
Zombie also spoke about his desire to move away from remakes, saying:
“The remake train is getting pretty tired now and when I made Halloween, everybody complained, either that it was too much like the original or too different. I like that people either love or hate what I do because it’s better than being in the middle, which means forgettable. But when you do an original premise, they take it on face value and after three years of not being able to win on Halloween, I just couldn’t go through that again.”
That’s all we know for now. Fans of Zombie’s original films, House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects, it’s safe to get excited for this one.
