Today we have a few updates on some upcoming films going 3D. Shadow Locked was talking to Roger Christian, the art director on Star Wars and Alien, when an interesting subject came up regarding where Ridley Scott wants to take one of the most unique horror franchises in cinema.

Ridley’s doing the next Alien in 3D… Ridley told me some of his ideas when we were here in Toronto. He has a very clear understanding of where this should go. They kind of stopped dead one of the greatest horror franchises there’s ever been, and it had legs to go on. So I’m hoping he’ll revive another three. The world certainly wants it, and the fans want it – everybody.

Since the rise of 3D (or the rise of Avatar depending on who you talk to) people are looking for new depth in their movies, not to mention the added revenue for the studios. This is both the physical illusion and narrative. As discussed previously, 3D has the potential to completely immerse viewers into a fictional world.

Alien is risky. The world it is set in is grounded in some realism while still attaining a dark fantasy aspect. We could be able to see the mass of buildings and spacecrafts. However, we don’t want it to be just a novelty such as cheap scares, the alien mouth coming out of the screen, or ridiculously unneeded gore ala My Bloody Valentine.

As a quick note, Martin Campbell‘s The Green Lantern and Zack Snyder‘s Sucker Punch will also be in 3D. The former may actually shoot in 3D, while the latter will be added through post-production since filming has wrapped (via Box Office Mojo). Both films will see a 2011 release.

Do you think 3D will be able to add a new level to the Alien franchise, or just a gimmick? What about Green Lantern and Sucker Punch?
