Last year I attended Sundance Film Festival and was taken aback by Richard Linklater‘s Before Midnight, cementing his series as a perfect trilogy. As the year progressed, no other film quite stood a chance and it remained my number one film of the year. It looks like I may be experiencing some déjà vu in 2014, as this year’s Sundance brought his 12-years-in-the-making Boyhood and it once again, turned out to be the best thing at the festival and set quite a bar for the rest of the year.
We’ve now got word on when you can mark your calendars, as IFC Films, who have funded the film the last decade-plus have set it for a limited release on July 11th, and then it’ll expand the rest of the summer. Before or after the film arrives, I strongly encourage one to also check out our extensive interview with Linklater and star Ellar Coltrane as we gear up for the release.
In other Sundance-related news, Roadside Attractions have set Anton Corbijn‘s A Most Wanted Man for July 25th, a film I was slightly let down by, but features a great performance, and the last leading one, from Philip Seymour Hoffman. They’ve also given The Skeleton Twins, which features Kristin Wiig and Bill Hader‘s finest performances yet (my full review), a September 19th release. Lastly, Life of Crime, which is based on Elmore Leonard‘s The Switch, opens on August 29th.
Is Boyhood on your calendar? Looking forward to Hoffman’s last leading performance?
