She’ll take part in what’s easily our most-anticipated film this year, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s Inherent Vice, but if Reese Witherspoon wants any chances in the awards game, it’ll certainly be with Wild. Coming from Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée, the first trailer has landed today for the drama that will likely bow at fall festivals ahead of a December release.

Scripted by Nick Hornby, it’s based on Cheryl Strayed‘s popular memoirs, tracking her hike across the Pacific Crest Trail — a 2,663-mile journey from the Mojave Desert to the Washington-Canada border — after both her mother passed and own marriage ended poorly. The first trailer is fairly compelling and should give Witherspoon one of her better roles as of late. Also starring Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Gaby Hoffman, Kevin Rankin, and Michiel Huisman, check out the trailer below, which uses Beck‘s Turn Away.

With the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother, Cheryl Strayed has lost all hope. After years of reckless, destructive behavior, she makes a rash decision. With absolutely no experience, driven only by sheer determination, Cheryl hikes more than a thousand miles of the Pacific Crest Trail, alone. WILD powerfully captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.
