Jaume Balaguero and Alberto Marini made names for themselves in their native Spain as crafters of successful horror films. Now, the [Rec] co-director and executive producer are hoping to do the same around these parts, re-teaming for their first English-language film.
The two are collaborating on Summer Camp, a genre movie in the same vein as the [Rec] saga which, based on a screenplay by Marini and Danielle Schleif, reportedly follows the “infection” theme prevalent in the popular zombie films. The two will switch roles for the project, with Marini stepping in as director — a first for the writer/producer — and Balaguero acting as executive producer. [Variety]
Details on the plot are few, but Marini gave some insight to what fans can expect from the film. Of the basic concept, he said:
“There’s a game common to the majority of kids around the world, both in and out of summer camps: ‘Tag, you are it’…. The fun of the game is that the roles are constantly changing: The pursuer becomes the pursued, the cat becomes the mouse . . . We wanted to capture this idea in a horror-filled, adrenaline-pumped movie…. A film in which you’re never sure who your friends or who your enemies are, a game you’d never wish to be part of and where, sometimes, in order to escape the only option is to attack.”
Summer Camp is slated to go into production in late 2013.
