Norway knows its way around a genre film, as recently proven with the impressive found footage thriller, Trollhunter, and director Tommy Wirkola’s comedy horror ride, Dead Snow. Now the country will add action-adventure to its national cinema with a work based on one of its oldest texts.
A trailer for Ragnorak was released, and it hints at big budget fantasy reminiscent of Indiana Jones and The Mummy. The title refers to a series of events in Norse mythology thought to bring about the death of the gods and, ultimately, the end of the world – in other words, this could be one epic film.
Directed by Mikkel Sandemose (Cold Prey), the plot follows an archeologist named Sigurd who goes on an expedition to uncover the secrets of the Ragnorak myth. Based on the footage, it’s safe to assume that he found something, but the trailer is saving its surprises for later. Synopsis:
An archeologist is convinced the Oseberg Viking ship contains the answer to the mystery of Ragnarok, the end of days in Norse mythology. He mounts an expedition to “No Man’s Land” between Norway and Russia, which holds a secret more terrifying than he could possibly imagine.
Ragnorak stars Pål Sverre Hagen (Kon-Tiki), Nicolai Cleve Broch, Bjørn Sundquist and Sofia Helin. The film’s distributor, Magnolia Pictures, has yet to set a release date for the US.
