Warner Bros. Pictures has brought on R.J. Cutler (The September Issue) to direct The Au Pairs, an adaptation of the Melissa de la Cruz novel by the same name. The book is the first in a series of young-adult stories, of which the studio had acquired the film rights in late 2006.
The story focuses on three teenage girls who spend a summer in the Hamptons, working as nannies for a wealthy family. The series is similar in topical content to Cecily von Ziegesar’s “Gossip Girl” series and Zoe Dean’s “The A-List” series, and the film is likely to draw a similar audience.
The film is being produced by Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen of Flower Films, as well as Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy of Alloy. The screenplay is by Liz Garcia.
The film is scheduled to begin shooting this summer, with a 2011 release.
