Precious has been the only film to win the top prize at Sundance AND Toronto International Film Festival and the Oscar buzz is strong. You may wonder what director Lee Daniels is doing next? Variety reports that Selma, a film that traces the “historic 1965 march in the Alabama town that marked the political and emotional peak of the civil rights movement”, will be his next project. Producer Christian Colson, who was also behind Slumdog Millionaire and Boyle’s next film 127 Hours, will be working with Daniels on Selma. No cast has been announced yet, but Paul Webb, who is behind Lincoln (the Steven Spielberg project) has written the script.

I’m very much looking forward to seeing Precious this weekend, after missing it at The Toronto Film Festival. As Gitesh Pandya from Box Office Guru mentions, only 2 films this decade have reached the Top 5 with less than 200 theaters – Precious & Paranormal Activity. As the box office, critical, and Oscar buzz is at full force, I’m interested to see what kind of awards Precious receives in the coming months. His next project sounds like another award friendly film. The Film Stage will keep you updated as casting is likely to be announced soon.

Selma is looking to start production in the spring for a late 2010 release.
