Though it may seem like there isn’t an original piece of writing left to produce, it’s not for a lack of trying. Last year, screenwriter Derek Hass started the Web site Popcorn Fiction as a venue “where new popular short fiction could flourish, and Hollywood could have a new resource for cultivating great ideas.”
It may be a resource that’s finally being tapped. A few months back Jerry Bruckheimer optioned Haas’ own short story Shake. Now, there’s word that several buyers are considering Todd Stein’s short story Tipping Point, which reads like a sci-fi futuristic fever dream a la Blade Runner. [/ Film]
The rumored buyers include names like Rudin and Kurtzman/Orci. Big time.
Here’s the logline: It’s 2026 and a Zero Growth bill has been passed banning an increase in population. We follow Solomon, who hunts “illegals.”
Sure, not the most subtle of allegories, but at least people still think in metaphors sometimes.
Instead of offering an opinion on the piece, read it and get your own. We’ll sit down and talk about together later.
What do you think of this resource? Will it help this dry well of originality?
