Much-discussed Danish director Susanne Bier has been making all kinds of headlines lately. Days before her latest film, In a Better World, took home the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, she had announced plans to remake the César-nominated Rapt. Now, it’s been revealed this talented auteur known for compelling and heart-wrenching drama is taking on new territory, teaming with Pierce Brosnan on All You Need is Love, a romantic comedy that will center on a Danish family in Italy.

According to 24 Frames, Brosnan has just signed on to play the lead in the rom-com which will shoot in Amalfi this spring. Brosnan described All You Need is Love as “delightful love story… which has punch and deals with loss and a great love.” Speaking to her reputation for melodrama, Bier told Italian newspaper La Repubblica, “Enough with conflicts,” and called Love as, “a tender story with a much lighter atmosphere than my previous works.”

As an ardent fan of Bier’s After the Wedding, which balanced drama with glowing moments of levity, I’m eager to see what she’ll do within the romantic comedy genre. She’s got a real flare for painting the complexities of human relationships, and with the world’s attention on her, this seems a bold but wise move.

What do you think of Bier’s proposed rom-com?
