Suddenly one of the most prolific pairings working in cinema, Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have teamed again — as director and star, respectively — for Patriots Day. The story concerns an account of the events — leading up to, during, and after — the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, specifically following Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman) and officers under in his department such as Sergeant Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg).
Starting with 2013’s Lone Survivor, Berg and Wahlberg’s real-life-to-screen collaboration began as a critically successful and commercially viable output, although this past weekend’s $20 million take for Deepwater Horizon didn’t come close to its $100 million-plus budget. However, Patriots Day, which has a score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, certainly has a more modest budget, so we’ll see if this recreation of another harrowing event connects more with audiences come December.
