While her roles thus far here in Hollywood this year virtually went unseen with Zoolander 2 and The Brothers Grimsby, Penélope Cruz had to go back to her roots for a more substantial role. ma ma, a new film from Julio Medem, follows the actress (also serving as a producer for the first time) as an unemployed teacher afflicted with breast cancer who finds love. Ahead of a a release next month in the U.S., a new trailer has now arrived.
“ma ma is right up my street: Large emotional and dramatic intensity, and it turns on the intimacy of the characters — one woman, two men, played by Luis Tosar and Asier Etxeandia, who love her, and a 10-year-old boy,” Medem said about the film. “It’s the first time I portray a character who’s not a woman and lover but a mother. Maternity is key in Ma Ma. The tragedy stems from that.”
