Since any New York cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Anthology Film Archives

Friday sees the start of a weekend-long Nervous Magic Lantern Festival, a tribute to Ken Jacobs‘ device which, according to the site, “uses lightweight fans and an exterior spinning shutter – along with the hands and creative mind of an active projectionist – to fill the screen with moving 3D forms that can be seen from every possible angle, no special glasses required.” This is not to be missed.

Designing_Woman_MPOTWMuseum of Modern Art

A great choreographer is celebrated in “All That Jack (Cole),” which leads off with Vincente Minnelli‘s Designing Woman and George Cukor‘s Les Girls.

Film Forum

A restoration of Fargo begins its one-week run.

On Sunday morning, a 35mm print of Joe Dante‘s Explorers will be introduced by Ethan Hawke.

IFC Center

The Shining and Taste the Blood of Dracula (the latter on 35mm) play at midnight.

A print of The Verdict screens before noon throughout the weekend.

The Legend of Fong Sai-yuk will screen on 35mm at midnight this Friday and Saturday.

Labyrinth and Reservoir Dogs are both sold-out, but standby tickets may be available the day of each showing.

Museum of the Moving Image

Two avant-garde programs play this weekend: the first concerns Austrian filmmaker Björn Kämmerer; the second is a selection of international shorts. Both are being presented this Saturday.

A print of Shirley Clarke‘s Portrait of Jason plays on Friday.

Film Society of Lincoln Center

The New York Jewish Film Festival will present Vladimir Vilner‘s Benya Kirk with live musical accompaniment this Saturday.

Sunshine Cinema

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly plays late on Friday and Saturday night.
