It looks like Warner Bros is finally getting the wheels rolling on its long-awaited Tarzan movie. The company, which has spent the last few years trying to get the project off the ground, is rumored to have recently put two writers on the story.

According to Deadline, Adam Cozad (Archangel) and Craig Brewer (Black Snake Moan) have each been commissioned to write their own separate interpretations of the familiar Tarzan story. This isn’t totally unheard of when starting new franchises. What usually happens is the studio will choose whichever script they like better and possibly consider revising the other for a sequel.

And with over 80 films already having the name Tarzan in the title, it’s going to take a special script to stand out. How can Warner Bros possibly bring anything new to the table? Disney has already cornered the animated market with its 1999 Tarzan.

I suspect we’re in story for a gritty Tarzan reboot in the realistic style of Batman Returns. Cozad wrote Archangel, a mystery crime drama about the death of Joseph Stalin, so I wouldn’t expect a family-friendly CGI romp of a script from him. Brewer, known for Hustle & Flow and Black Snake Moan, may very well produce a story even less safe for kids.

I, for one, would be very excited for a dark Tarzan with a hard R-rating.

Would you like this Tarzan to be a cartoon, 3D, CGI? How about a hard R-rating?
