One of the greatest up-and-coming (and overlooked) directors is Nicolas Winding Refn. He is behind the Pusher trilogy as well as Bronson and Valhalla Rising. With each new project he takes on something wildly different and his next is no exception.
It has been rumored but Refn spoke to Filmshaft (via The Playlist) and revealed he will shoot his Bangkok-set neo-western Only God Forgives this summer. The film “centers on a Thai police lieutenant whose rivalry with a gangster sees the two settling their differences in a Thai-boxing match.”
He was originally going to shoot Drive with Ryan Gosling next, but nothing has been heard about it for awhile. I would love for him to take some time to do Drive, especially with Gosling but I’m up for a neo-western as well. I just rewatched Bronson a few days ago and that film is brilliant. I can’t wait to rewatch Valhalla Rising. It comes to theaters via IFC on June 4th.
Do you like Refn? Are you excited about Only God Forgives?
