Since his humble beginnings on Nickelodeon Nick Cannon has spread to nearly every entertainment medium you can think of, hosting TV shows (America’s Got Talent), starring in movies (Love Don’t Cost a Thing), impregnating famous pop divas (Mariah Carey) and even hosting his own radio show in New York City. And now he’s looking to conquer another job: that of a film director.
New York Post (via Cinema Blend) reports that Cannon is readying a “modern version” of the classic 90’s trilogy House Party that starred rappers/actors Kid ‘n Play. Cannon had this to say about the project:
“[I’m] taking a lot of the young hip-hop acts of today and putting them in a movie with a bunch of comedians, make something happen there”
Even though it can be taken at such, I implore you not to assume that means he’s remaking House Party. In fact that doesn’t seem to be the case; it’s just the easiest way to describe just what Cannon is cooking up. And for me, who loves the first three House Party movies (the fourth, which went straight to video, might as well not count), that gets me excited. If it can have a similar fun loving tone mixed in with some killer dance/music numbers I’m all for it.
It would be hypocritical of me to feel otherwise, considering how much I (not so secretly) love the Step Up franchise. As for Nick Cannon going into directing…let’s see what he’s got before we start piling on the guy. He’s shown that he’s got an excellent work ethic and there is a good deal of talent to back that up; plus if you grew up watching All That on Nickelodeon you’re required to root for any former cast member anyway. It’s the blood oath we signed when we tuned into SNICK every Saturday.
How do you envision a House Party-style movie to look in the 21st century?
