News Corp. Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch had an quarterly earnings call yesterday talked a bit about the sequel to James Cameron‘s Avatar. THR reports that Murch said that they are in “very early talks about it” and Cameron has “ideas for a sequel.” He also adds, “We will all be pushing for one.” Don’t expect it soon though, like many Cameron projects tend to take quite some time. Murdoch said to analysts don’t “hold your breath for an early one.” First Showing has a nice write-up about what a sequel could contain, check it out over there.
Especially after the success of the film, we all knew a sequel was inevitable, but it is good to hear that the high-ups very much want one. Another interesting not is that they expect “60% or more of the profit from Avatar will come in over the next two quarters.” They plan to continue the theatrical run as long as the box office receipts keep up. There was some controversy on whether or not Alice In Wonderland will kick Avatar out of IMAX/3D theaters come March 5th, but we will have to wait and see.
They also talked about the home release of Avatar. They are planning for a 2D DVD/Blu-ray release “during his company’s current fiscal year, which ends June 30.” Unfortunately, a 3D release will be later when “the technology is ready.”
I never got a chance to see Avatar in 2D, so I’m excited to see what the Blu-ray will look like. It’s also nice to see everyone confident in pushing forward with a sequel to Avatar. Personally, I would rather like to see Cameron take on another project like Battle Angel before he heads back to Pandora.
What do you think about an Avatar sequel? Will you but the Avatar DVD/Blu-ray?
