It was around this time last year that we learned Noah Baumbach secretly started shooting his next film, following Mistress America and his documentary De Palma. While there was no confirmation regarding the exact cast, title, or plot, clues from the set pointed to Adam Sandler, Ben Stiller, Emma Thompson, and Dustin Hoffman all being part of the ensemble, and now official word has come in, along with a distribution deal.
Netflix has picked up worldwide rights for the film, which is titled The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected), according to Deadline. They also confirm the aforementioned cast members, as well as Elizabeth Marvel and Grace Van Patten. The original synopsis from the set read as follows: “The film tells the story of an estranged New York family coming together in preparation of artist & patriarch Harold’s career retrospective.” The trade now updates that with a few more details, saying the story will specifically follow “adult siblings contending with the influence of their aging father.”
“Noah Baumbach is an important voice in American filmmaking and his films are always highly anticipated around the world. Noah is among the filmmakers that we were eager to work with, and I know that film enthusiasts everywhere will be as moved by this film as we were,” said Ted Sarandos, Netflix Chief Content Officer. “We’re thrilled to be the avenue in which global audiences will be able to see the film.”
Although no specific release date has been set yet, it’ll arrive in limited theatrical release and on Netflix by the end of the year.
