After releasing the sci-fi comedy Extraterrestrial this past year, Timecrimes director Nacho Vigalondo is wasting no time getting to his next project and it’s one that could easily provide his biggest exposure yet. The Spanish director is already secretly in production on his third film in Madrid and it will serve as his English-language debut.
Screen Daily has news on the film, which is titled Open Windows and stars Elijah Wood and adult actress Sasha Grey, most famous in the Hollywood world for Steven Soderbergh‘s The Girlfriend Experience. Described as an “innovative” and “high-tech suspense thriller,” the film follows a real-time storyline taking place in 90 minutes dealing with “the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet.”
While that short logline is pretty basic, producer Vincent Maraval describes it as a “tense” thriller that mixes “action and terror, updating the key elements of 70s paranoid thrillers through today’s computer and online environment.” Compared to Brian De Palma’s Blow Out, by the director himself, the film follows Wood and his search for an actress (Grey), who has been captured by a villain named Chord (Neil Maskell).
Jumping into the technical details, producers revealed that the film will use a plethora of cameras, including “webcams, head cameras, tablets, mobile phones, 3D mapping cameras as well as security and satellite camera.” Vigalondo is one of the most talented rising directors there is, so hopefully he can provide something new to this found footage genre. The action will be followed on the screen of a laptop connected to the Internet – an approach that has excited us all from the outset. Something like this means going beyond high concept films like Paranormal Activity, Cloverfield or Chronicle. Instead of simulating a home video camera, we will be representing a computer desktop. The movie screen becomes a computer screen, and the spectator becomes the protagonist of this adventure.
