It’s almost summer, and you know what that means. Time for…a penguin movie?

Mr. Popper’s Penguins isn’t just any old penguin movie, though. This adaptation of a 1938 children’s book stars Jim Carrey as Mr. Popper, an important businessman who ignores the people closest to him (including his gorgeous wife, played by Carla Gugino). Then Popper unexpectedly inherits six live penguins. They start taking over his swanky New York home, turning his life upside-down (probably in all the right ways.)

Here’s the new international trailer Fox recently let loose upon the Internet.

Now I know what you’re thinking. The computer-generated penguins look pretty shabby (they filmed with real penguins as much as they could), and do we really need another dancing flightless bird team?

But don’t let your trailer prejudices get you down. Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a real pedigree production. With practiced children’s-film director Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Spiderwick Chronicles) at the helm, writing this movie off as a tired penguin piece may be an early mistake. You also have to consider Carrey, who has both pulled off way less inspired material (the Ace Ventura films) and failed more promising premises (The Number 23).

Mr. Popper’s Penguins will be chilling in theaters starting June 17.

More penguins- necessary or unnecessary?
