Intrepid Pictures — the studio behind The Strangers and last week’s poorly received, The Raven — are continuing their line of horror projects with Oculus. According to Variety, the production company has hired Mike Flanagan to direct the project, from a script he wrote alongside Jeff Howard.
The new horror project centers on two recently-orphaned children; the brother is being charged for murdering the parents, while the sister believes the real culprit is in fact “a haunted antique mirror.” After being completely rehabilitated and well in his ’20s, “the brother is ready to move on but his sister is determined to prove that the haunted mirror was responsible for destroying their family.”
Flanagan has had some experience with the horror genre; his extremely low budget film Absentia won the best feature at the 2011 Shriekfest. Oculus is based on his 2006 short Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan, which involves a man who is convinced that a large ornate mirror possessed his father and later caused him to commit a horrible murder. The director is also set to direct the horror film Scare Dares, out sometime next year.
