The trailer for the intriguing indie I Melt With You has just been released via Gordonandthewhale.com. The film is directed by Mark Pellington and stars Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven and Rob Lowe. The plot follows four friends who meet up annually to reconnect. However, there present meeting turns out to be far less jovial then preceding years. The four friends are forced to confront their life choices and how they have measured up against their own expectations. These reflections allow the four friends to remember a forgotten promise that they had made years ago.
The trailer immediately engulfs you in a dark pseudo-reality where Thomas Jane seemingly accounts the events that have just taken place. While Jane launches into his monologue, visually arresting images stream through the other side of the screen hinting at the impending doom that will soon be uncovered. There is a lot to be said about the no-budget indie film genre. Although they are often unable to provide the visual stimuli of studio blockbusters the viewer can usually count on a truly original concept. I Melt With You seems to be no exception. Thomas Jane captures your attention dragging down deep into the depths of his own psychosis. As you’re watching you’re thinking, “How did I get here? This is only a trailer.” This powerful performance, packed to the brim with desperation reminded of Thomas Jane’s critically impressive roles in films such as Boogie Nights and Magnolia.
Like Jane, Jeremy Piven has received an enormous amount commercial success in his own HBO series, as the notorious Super-Agent Ari Gold. I think a stylistic departure would benefit both Jane and Piven’s carriers. I Melt With You appears to be the vehicle to provide just that.
Is there a place for the no-budget indie in Hollywood?
