Jumping back and forth from major Hollywood tentpoles like Inception and The Dark Knight Rises to smaller dramas like Rust & Bone and even Midnight in Paris, Oscar winner Marion Cotillard has proven time and time again that her projects are ones to keep on your radar. Having completed two of our most-anticipated 2013 films with James Gray‘s Lowlife and Blood Ties (co-written by Gray), she’s now set her sights on another potential project.
Variety is reporting that the actress is looking to lead an adaptation of Octave Mirbeau‘s acclaimed novel Diary of a Chambermaid. Already adapted into films by both Jean Renoir and Luis Buñuel, this time the gig is going to director Benoit Jacquot, who gave us last year’s period drama Farewell, My Queen.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Cotillard would take the lead role as Celestine, described as a “a young and ambitious woman who works as a chambermaid for wealthy families from 1890 to 1900. Through Celestine’s eyes, the film will shed light on the condition of house servants and perversions within France’s upper-class society at the turn of the 20th century.”
While talks between the director and star are currently underway, it may not be until 2015 before we see this one, as production wouldn’t begin until May 2014. In the meantime, expect Cotillard to complete a handful of other projects and one can check out the complete 1946 Renoir version below and the trailer for Bunuel’s 1964 take.
