Could some of the major studios of the movie industry be searching to merge during this hard economic time? Mario Gabelli, CEO of GAMCO Investors, seems to think a spree of consolidation between studios is on its way within the next six to twelve months. Why? Obviously it saves costs in production, advertising, prints, and much more, however it also brings benefits such as globalization of products. The names being mentioned most are Universal and Sony Pictures however Gabelli himself seems to be investing in Viacom, the parent company of Paramount. Perhaps a merge is on its way.
It’s interesting to see that in these times where the big name studios are having a slight struggle, the Indie studios seem to be rising up. Just yesterday DF Indie Studios revealed itself to everyone in the industry. The company is very unique as it already has many professional names on board, provides up to $10 million of financing for indie projects, and promises national theater distribution throughout America. “Notable names such as veteran producer Ted Hope and distribution ace Ira Deutchman are involved with the company, as well as Scott Free, the production company of Ridley Scott and his brother Tony Scott,” says Cinematical. The new project hopes to raise $100 million for their venture and is already over half way to their goal. Many are getting on board with the studio hoping it will create from 10,000 – 15,000 film jobs over the next five years.
