Pinhead, perhaps the last of the original 80’s icons not to receive the remake/reboot/rehash treatment in recent years, is growing one step closer to a big screen comeback. FirstShowing is reporting that horror duo Patrick Lussier and Todd Farmer will be taking the reins on the remake. The inclusion of these two, who also remade My Bloody Valentine, suggests that this remake will be in 3D. Rumors suggest that Amber Heard, who stars in the team’s current film Drive Angry 3D, will take on the lead role.
Lussier and Farmer were previously attached to another Dimension horror property, Halloween 3D, before that project was put on hold indefinitely. This project has gone through an array of directors, with even original Hellraiser director Clive Barker expressing interest in the project, but it looks like Lussier and Farmer will get the project off the ground.
Pinhead, despite being an interesting character, has always been a lesser-tier slasher icon. The first Hellraiser film came out around the time other slasher series were beginning to wind down and after the fourth film limped its way into theaters, the remaining entries all went direct-to-video (a fate Freddy, Jason and Michael all managed to escape).
The duo will have the daunting task that also faced Samuel Bayer (A Nightmare on Elm Street remake) of recasting an iconic slasher character with a new actor as it appears there are no plans to bring Doug Bradley back as Pinhead.
